Quilting for Down's Syndrome Babies

I am posting this rather late for a Sunday. I have been busy at the sewing machine. Last week at our guild's monthly Sit n Stitch we made quilt tops for Down's Syndrome babies. We had a longtime guild member named Phyllis whose little grandson was born with Down's Syndrome. So, we started a charity quilt program and called it Phyl's Angel Babies. Phyllis' daughter Alecia is the the executive director of the Middle TN division of the Down's Syndrome Association. We make and donate quilts and she takes them with her when she talks to new parents of DS babies. Sadly, cancer took Phyllis away from us last year.

The fabric had all been donated to us. Some of our members used their Accuquilt fabric cutters to prepare these scrappy tumbler quilts. Lots of work on their part. At the Sit n Sew we had approximately 35 ladies sewing away. That's my friend Sharon with her pink Janome. My black Singer featherweight is in the foreground. Teresa who blogs at A Quilt and A Prayer has her back to us in the pink tee shirt.
Last evening I finished piecing the quilt top that I started at SNS. Then, today I pieced another top from a kit I brought home. I had to take photos inside because today we have rain one hour and sun the next. Weird weather!

They even provided these cute flannel print fabrics for the backings.

Now I hope to find some time to relax and slow stitch on some of those baskets I blogged about recently. Pop over to Kathy's Quilts to see what other are slow stitching

Great job finishing your tops Donna! Those flannels will be perfect for the backs :) And speaking of backs - so glad you got "that" side of me instead of the front LOL!!!!

Why am I not surprised that Teresa was the quilter in the bright pink shirt. 😎

What a wonderful thing you all are doing for those parents and their sweet babies. Bless you all.

Oh what a great charity project! Nothing says love than a nice little quilt and so soft with those flannel backs. A great way to use up those small scraps of fabric also! Great job!

Love your featherweight.. and love that you get to hang out in real time with so many quilters! You must be in a large guild... how fun is that! I love the baby flimsies you made and flannel on the back will be divine for sure! thanks for sharing Donna! Have a blessed week with your slow stitched endings... hope you are planning to bag those instead of binding them traditionally.. sounds better and easier for limp downs babies... coming from a background of caring for them in the hospital setting! ;) Kathi

What a wonderful cause to be making quilts for Down's Syndrome babies. Please let me know if you want/need some fabric & I can start putting a box together to send your way.

This is such a great project! I know the parents really appreciate the quilts. More importantly, knowing that there are kind and caring people there to help and support them. Your quilt tops look wonderful, and flannel for the backing is a great choice.
